Acts 24:24-25 A few days later Felix came back with his wife, Drusilla, who was Jewish. Sending for Paul, they listened as he told them about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 As he reasoned with them about righteousness and self-control and the coming day of judgment, Felix became frightened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.”
Felix had the authority to release Paul; Paul’s freedom was in Felix’s hands. And yet Paul boldly shared the gospel with Felix, including talking about the final judgment. Felix was known to be dishonest and take bribes, and he had deceptively precipitated Drusilla’s divorce from her first husband so he could marry her. So talk of sin and judgment scared him—as it should! But Paul didn’t hold back. Rather than trying to curry Felix’s favor and win his release, Paul boldly shared the gospel, knowing he could offend or frighten the man who held his life in his hands.
Of course, Paul also knew that it wasn’t Felix, but God who held his life in his hands. It is God who has the final authority. And God had already told Paul he was going to Rome, so Paul knew he wouldn’t die or rot in jail because of Felix. Paul’s boldness came because he knew who is really in charge.
Jesus began the Great Commission, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations.” God is in charge, so don’t hold back, don’t be afraid of what anyone can do to you. Be bold and share the gospel!
Lord, forgive me for the times I have held back, and empower me by Your Spirit to boldly share the gospel with everyone you put before me.
